Patch Notes
The goal of this session was to try out Cosmos with two mono sources and create generative melodies using the pulsar’s SHAOS and synthesis modules controlled via CV.
—COSMOS—
Cosmos in granular delay mode again, longest time. I think this is my favorite algorithm from the default firmware. A tiny bit of Feedback, with Blur and Drift manipulated during performance. I used moderate amounts of SUP to keep fresh sounds at the forefront. No additional processing or FX.
—LYRA—
Lyra 8 tuned to C Harmonic Minor scale with voices 5-8 one octave higher than voices 1-4 [C D E♭ F][G A♭ B C] I typically use chords tuned by 3rd or 5ths on the Lyra because the oscillators are slightly unstable when tuned close together, but this time I wanted to have the entire scale available. 50% sharpness added on all voices, with moderate delay and a tiny bit of strong drive for harmonics.
—PULSAR—
SHAOS and the BASS module were the entire focus of the pulsar for this performance. The 3 Bit output of the SHAOS module was used for maximum pitch variation and more interesting melodies (8 states), attenuated to fit into the 4 octave range available via CV and quantized to C Harmonic Minor scale using a eurorack module, with manual transposition via the pressure sensitive CV contacts. An attenuated copy of the 3 Bit signal also modulates the master clock so that the melody slows down and changes speed semi-randomly, using the triangle LFO output asynchronously from the master clock for VCA modulation. The SHAOS module is synchronized to the master clock, so it’s self modulating loop. SHAOS Pattern length is set to ’16’ and in this length the data pin becomes active. The values generated will stay in a 16 step loop until modulation is applied to the data pin input. I used the square LFO output asynchronously from the master clock which let me strike an interesting mix of repetition and change in the melody.
-Disting Quantizer Input Signals-
Algorithm A6 Quantizer
P0 Atten X = 16-20 range 50-60% approx
Transpose mode = 1
Z scale = +15 Harmonic Minor
-Pitch and Triggering-
SHAOS 3BIT → Ornament Alligator / TS Converter → Data Ch 1 → Atten. Ch 1 (50%) → Data Ch 3 → Disting In X
Transposition Pulsar CV Touch → Ornament Alligator / TS Converter → Atten. Ch 3 (25%) → Disting In Y
These inputs generate two output paths from the Disting MK. 4
Output A (V/oct Pitch CV) → Pulsar TS / Alligator Converter → BASS Pitch CV In Output B (Trigger) → Pulsar TS / Alligator Converter → BASS Trigger In
-Audio Signal Path-
Bass Out → VCA In
VCA Out → Atten. → Mix In
VCA Out → Atten. → Reverb In
-Modulation-
Tri LFO → Atten. → VCA CV
Tri LFO → Inverter → FX Time
Sqr LFO → SHAOS Data
SHAOS 3BIT → Inverter → Master Clock Mod CLK Sync → SHAOS CLK
